Harmless and its Values

By Caroline Harroe (Harmless CEO)

Values are central to the work of Harmless because they guide the organisation’s mission and approach to supporting individuals who self harm and are at risk of suicide. Harmless is grounded in the values of compassion, respect, empowerment and collaboration.

Compassion is at the heart of Harmless’ work, as the organisation recognises that individuals who self harm are often struggling with difficult emotions and may feel isolated and alone. Harmless aims to provide a safe and supportive environment where individuals can feel heard and understood.

Respect is another important value for Harmless as the organisation recognises that everyone’s experience of self harm is unique and that there is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to feel or cope. Harmless aims to create a non-judgmental space where individuals can explore their feelings and experiences without fear of criticism or shame.

Empowerment is also a key value for Harmless as the organisation aims to support individuals in taking control of their own lives and making positive changes. They recognise that individuals who self harm may feel powerless and helpless, and the organisation aims to provide tools and resources to help individuals build resilience and improve their well-being.

Finally, collaboration is an essential value for the organisation, as it recognises that supporting individuals who self harm requires a multi-disciplinary approach. The team works closely with healthcare professionals, educators and community organisations to provide comprehensive support and resources for individuals who self harm and their loved ones.

Overall, values are central to the work of Harmless because they guide the organisation’s approach to supporting individuals who self harm and are at risk of suicide, and they help to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can feel heard, understood and empowered.
