Changing the Narrative: World Suicide Prevention Day

World Suicide Prevention Day – Tuesday 10th September 2024

Suicide is a major public health problem with far-reaching social, emotional and economic consequences. It is estimated that there are currently more than 700,000 suicides per year worldwide, and we know that each suicide profoundly affects many more people. Suicide remains a critical global issue, affecting individuals and communities everywhere. During 2022, the were 5,284 suicides registered in England alone.

On World Suicide Prevention Day, individuals, communities and organisations come together to raise awareness and encourage everyone to engage in open and honest discussions about suicide and suicidal behaviour. Changing the narrative around suicide is about transforming how this complex issue is perceived and moving from a culture of silence to one of openness, understanding and support.

On 10th September and beyond, we aim to show that talking about difficult feelings, including suicidal thoughts, doesn’t have to be intimidating. Every conversation, no matter how small, contributes to a supportive and understanding society. By initiating these conversations, we can break down stigma and create better cultures of understanding and support.

If you want to get involved in World Suicide Prevention Day, Harmless has developed a free media pack that is available to everyone to download and share.

We hope you can join us in helping work towards a future where suicide prevention is prioritised and everyone feels supported to get the help they need.
