By Caroline Harroe (Harmless CEO)
While Harmless may have a presence in multiple locations, our roots are firmly planted in the rural village of East Leake, Nottinghamshire. This isn’t just a geographical choice, but a decision deeply intertwined with our mission, history and the heart of our Tomorrow Project.
Nestled at the Crossroads
Geographically, East Leake occupies a unique position, sitting almost directly on the boundary between South Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire. This central location provides unparalleled access to our service delivery points across these three counties. It allows our team to efficiently reach individuals and communities in need, ensuring timely and effective support.
More Than Just Logistics
However, the significance of East Leake extends far beyond its strategic location. It represents the birthplace and beating heart of our Tomorrow Project. This innovative initiative, born out of a deep commitment to suicide prevention, has evolved into a beacon of hope for those struggling with self harm and suicidal thoughts.
The Birth of the Tomorrow Project
The Tomorrow Project was conceived in response to a pressing need for accessible and personalised support for individuals at risk. Recognising the gaps in existing services, we set out to create a programme that would empower individuals to build resilience, develop coping skills and envision a brighter future. The name ‘Tomorrow Project’ encapsulates the essence of our mission: to help individuals see beyond their current struggles and believe in the possibility of a better tomorrow. It signifies hope, resilience and the unwavering belief that every life has inherent value.
East Leake: The Seed of Hope
East Leake was the fertile ground where the seeds of the Tomorrow Project were sown. It’s where we first connected with individuals, families and communities affected by self harm and suicide. It’s where we listened to their stories, learned from their experiences and collaborated to develop a programme that would truly meet their needs. The village’s close-knit community and its willingness to embrace our vision played a pivotal role in the project’s success. It provided a safe and supportive environment for individuals to share their struggles, connect with others and embark on their journey towards healing and recovery.
A Legacy of Hope
Today, the Tomorrow Project continues to thrive, reaching individuals across the Midlands and beyond. While our physical presence may have expanded, our connection to East Leake remains strong. It serves as a reminder of our humble beginnings, our unwavering commitment and the transformative power of hope. For staff and clients alike, East Leake represents more than just a location. It symbolises the heart of our mission, the birthplace of the Tomorrow Project, and a testament to the resilience of the human spirit.
