Physical activity is not only good for our bodies, but also great for our minds and it is no secret that getting moving can have many positive impacts on our mental health. Whether it be weddings and parties or recreational classes, most of us are familiar with dancing at some point in our lives, and beyond just movement and music, dancing can offer many emotional, intellectual and relational benefits as well as being one of my personal ways to wellbeing!
Outside of my work and studies I am a dance coach; something that has been a huge part of my life for many years. Dance has always been a way for me to relieve tension and anxiety and has allowed me a space to surround myself with supportive and positive people. It is a chance for me to switch off from work, university and everyday stresses, and is a way to positively channel my energy!
Many studies have demonstrated the positive impacts that sports can have on mental wellbeing, so this is how I try to incorporate and practice the 5 ways to wellbeing through my own sport (5 ways to wellbeing are a set of evidence-based steps aimed at improving the mental health and wellbeing of the population).
Connect
Being part of a team can provide an environment that helps to nurture and develop a sense of connection and togetherness amongst individuals. When we talk about connecting, we usually think of connecting with others yet dance can also be a great way to connect and become more in touch with yourself and your emotions through creative expression.
Be active
This one is quite obvious! Exercise is an essential part of fighting age related cognitive decline and promotes a general sense of wellbeing, however it is the link between exercise and endorphins that really makes dance such a mood lifter for me!
Take Notice
Being on stage or creating a routine allows you to fully immerse yourself into what you are doing. Allowing yourself to think about nothing but your own movements can be a very mindful experience.
Learn
Dancing not only helps to build muscle in the body, but also in the brain! As a dancer practices and learns a routine, they are exercising the memory centres of their brain as well as developing their mental resilience and strength.
Give
My role as a coach has allowed me to give back to the sport I love and to encourage the same passion in the athletes I coach! Dancing teaches expression through movement, and when dancers are able to deal with difficult feelings and release them through steps and routines learned during lessons, whilst building confidence and recognising their abilities is something I find so special and empowering.
