Carers Rights Day aims to ensure carers are aware of their rights and know where to get help and support, whilst also raising the awareness of carers needs.
Carers UK research has highlight that 12,000 people in the UK become carers every day. This approximately 500 people an hour, and 8 people a minute. This totals to 4.3 million unpaid people between 2010-2020.
This year, in particular, the focus is on ‘Caring Costs’. Caring can result in various costs that we might not always consider or be aware of. Caring can cause costs to carers’ well-being, access to support, and quality of relationships by reducing time spent with family and friends, as well as financial costs, such as reduced employment/income and with the cost of living, this is particularly enhanced this year throughout the UK. This can cause an significant increase in pressure, stress and anxiety.
This is why it is so important we come together and help spread knowledge and support around carers rights. Carers UK have highlighted the key rights for carers, carers have the right to:
Discuss flexible working options
Protection from discrimination
Request a free flu jab
Receive a Carer’s Assessment
Be identified as a carer
Be consulted on hospital discharge
