‘This Mental Health Awareness Week we’re asking people to join us in taking action to support good mental health. Even small actions can help us feel hopeful and less powerless. And while our individual actions matter, when we come together, we are even more powerful’ – Mental Health Foundation

At Harmless and The Tomorrow Project, much of our work is built on the idea that connection is the strongest tool we have against distress. Here are some ways that we continue to take action to support good mental health and allow you to do the same.

Our Clinical Work
At the heart of our work is a commitment to providing structured, specialist care for those in distress. We offer dedicated, evidence-based clinical support for individuals who self harm, are in suicidal crisis or have been bereaved by suicide. Recognising the deep link between past experiences and current distress, our Fearless service provides specialist trauma support. We know that for those struggling, life can feel stagnant. Our action starts with reaching out and checking in. By providing a space where people are truly heard, we foster the hope that with the right support, life can and does get better.

Supporting the Support System: Friends & Family
We know that when one person struggles, an entire network of people is impacted. Action that connects means ensuring that those standing by a loved one aren’t standing alone. That’s why we offer dedicated group support sessions for family and friends who are supporting someone impacted by self harm or suicide. These sessions provide a safe space to share experiences and receive guidance, ensuring support system remains strong and responsive.

The Choir for Hope: Strength in Connection
Beyond clinical support, we provide spaces where people can find strength in shared experiences and creative expression. Our Choir for Hope is a unique service that brings together people with lived experience through the power of music, providing a supportive environment to build confidence and find joy.

Action through Expertise: The Academy at Harmless
The Academy at Harmless takes action by training others to respond to distress with skill, confidence and care. Delivered online and in-person by specialist Training & Education Officers, our CPD-accredited courses help professionals and the public effectively understand, identify and respond to self harm, suicide and poor mental health. This helps to create stronger, more supportive communities and saves lives.

Our annual From Harm to Hope and Suicide Bereavement conferences also give people the opportunity to come together, share expertise and learn from others in the field.

Meeting You Where You Are
Action that connects means we don’t wait for others to reach in and find us, we reach out. We take our services into the heart of our local communities. You might have seen our stalls at local festivals or sports events, hosting online workshops, or at a fundraising day. By being visible and accessible, we make our support more inclusive and break down the barriers to seeking help.

A Constant Commitment to Improvement
And the work never stops. We are always striving to do more, to do better. We have lived experience at the heart of everything we do – that means we are constantly asking our clients, their families and friends, and our colleagues for feedback on the way we do things, so we can continue evolving for the better. By listening to those we serve, we ensure our actions remain relevant, compassionate and effective.
