I was unsure of coming to Harmless, but my wife really wanted me to give it a go – and within moments, I really felt listened to. I love that while I was the focus, there was also support available for my wife too

Carers, Family & Friends

Supporting someone who self harms or is feeling suicidal can be very difficult and challenging, and it is important to recognise that. Knowing that someone you care about is in emotional distress can create many feelings including fear, anger, frustration, helplessness and sadness.

Try to ensure that you have a way of dealing with your own reactions and feelings to this as the person you are supporting is going to need all the patience, understanding and support you can give. Remember that the individual you are supporting is in distress and their actions are not intended to make you suffer.

Harmless understands that friends and family affected by self harm have unique needs. Harmless not only provide support for people who self harm, but their friends and family members too. Your needs deserve care and attention too.

Parents & Carers Support Group

Harmless has group support available for parents and carers whose child (up to the age of 21) is self harming. You can self-refer to this service here

Eligibility criteria for the group support:

  • A parent or carer whose child (up to the age of 21) is self harming or having thoughts of self harm.
  • Must be living in Nottinghamshire or Leicestershire.
  • Their child doesn’t have to be receiving support from Harmless.
